I am excited that I get the opportunity to train more people in our organization on Relias. What methods have you used or do you recommend for training new admins?
Hi Stacy! I think RELIAS has some great articles to read first and poke around RELIAS and then I come in with hand on in answering questions.
We us some blended learning for this. We do some online modules through Relias, and then have the do some live 1 on 1 training with us. It is a good mix. We are currently working on some more in-depth trainings for the different levels of supervisors and administrators and instructors. But blended is a really good way to make sure that they know what they are doing. Since there isn't really a way to allow an administrator to "play" in the system without potentially harming the data. So we don't really let them have at it. they have to complete training with us before they are even assigned the role. Bust certain levels of supervision like reports management, we do allow them to play around. There are some AMAZING trainings that are taught LIVE by Relias, and video recordings of past trainings, as well as demos. I would encourage incorporating those as much as possible. Here is a link to some of their AMAZING video tutorials. Video Tutorials
I first have to say, if you haven't seen Tracie Bosket 's super amazing Interactive manual for Admins which she shares towards the end of the comment thread on this post Re: How many of us create our own courses?
It is a super cool resource that demonstrates a creative way to help others help themselves.
Having said that, I think the best answer to your question is 'YES'! Just like other training opportunities a blended learning approach may be best, but it may also depend on the Admin. I really learned best by playing around in the system (pre-Connect), jotting down my questions, looking through the user manual, and if I had more in depth needs getting a gotomeeting to walk through the areas that gave me trouble. Now I mostly rely on Connect for areas I am not familiar with and occasionally attend a webinar for new features or functionality updates.
For our new admins I use the Relias manual and I print off the sections that apply to what they will be doing and I sit down with them and go over it step by step and show them the differnt fucntions they will be using. For the supervisors and instructors I created my own step by step instructions for them. This way they know what they can do in the system and how to do it. For my section on reports I also explain to them what the report is and what they would need to run this report for.
