Did you know that the risk of sepsis is higher for older adults that have been recently discharged from the hospital?  Especially if they were treated for C. diff.  70% higher!  A mere 30% if they were treated for any type of infection.  According to an article in McKnights today, the University of Michigan conducted research on this topic and found that the reason for these high numbers is due to the disruption of the the body's microbiome and the balance of healthy bacteria that is up ended with the use of antibiotics to treat an infection.

Costing more than $24 billion annually, sepsis is one of the most expensive causes for hospitalizations.  So as your residents return from the hospital, be extra watchful for signs and symptoms of sepsis.
